Victoria

“I know that I am young, but I am ready for the great responsibility that lies before me.”

Victoria by Daisy Goodwin. This book has been very much a happy accident for me. I snagged it haphazardly from a shelf on my way into the library to have something to read while my daughter played. This story is about the reign of Queen Victoria of England and so far it has been wonderful.

Dangerous Dreams by Mike Rhynard. This book was given to me as an eARC by NetGalley. I was very excited to get it as the story of the lost colony of Roanoke is fascinating to me. It is pretty much the only piece of American history that I find interesting. However, the story is falling flat. So much useless detail and the dialogue is never ending and dull. Probably going to DNF this one.

The Haunting of Ashburn House by Darcy Coates. I don’t pick up a horror novel often but when I do I like it to scare the dickens out of me. This one sure delivered on that. Even thinking about it now, a week after I finished reading it, I’m looking over my shoulder shuddering. Now that is effective horror.

What do you think you’ll read next?

“I will die. You will die. We will all die and the universe will carry on without care. All that we have is that shout into the wind – how we live. How we go. And how we stand before we fall.”

Golden Son by Pierce Brown. I read the first novel in this trilogy, Red Rising, not too awful long ago and was thrilled by it. Lately I’ve had an itch to continue the trilogy so hopefully I can get a copy of this book soon. Brown’s writing was riveting in Red Rising and his attention to detail and depth of story impressed me. Hopefully Golden Son lives up to expectations.

The Haunting of Ashburn House by Darcy Coates

Only one thing is certain: Ashburn’s dead are not at rest.
I have been wanting to get my hands on this book for months but couldn’t find it for a reasonable price or even on inter-library loan. I finally gave in and used the last of a Christmas gift card to purchase it. So far it has given me nightmares and made me not want to take the dog out at night. I think that is good praise for a horror/thriller, don’t you?

“It is a new world, and we must decide how we are to end this old one and begin it anew.”

A Court of Wings and Ruin by Sarah J Maas. I’m going to white girl out on you and just say that “I can’t even.” Read the review, I’m still too frustrated to talk about it rationally without going on an hour long rant. Tempting as that may be I won’t subject you to it here.

What do you think you’ll read next?

The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller. A book written about the ancient mythological hero Achilles? Don’t mind if I do! Achilles as a historical figure is not one to garner sympathy or affection so I’m very curious to see how Miller would have us connect with the hero.

“It’s a rare person to face who they are and not run from it – not be broken by it.”

A Court of Wings and Ruin by Sarah J Maas. I bet you would never have guess that I picked this up the very first moment that I could. It was agony having it delivered and not being able to read it immediately. As a bit of a surprise, so far it hasn’t been as good as the first two books. Sure, it’s a 700 page monster and there is plenty of time to get to some action but I’m jonesing. Hopefully I will have a full review for you over the weekend.

A Perilous Undertaking by Deanna Raybourn. I love historical fiction. I love mysteries. So how could I resist a historical mystery? The first book in the Veronica Speedwell Mysteries, A Curious Beginning, was excellent so I had high hopes for A Perilous Undertaking. Both books have witty dialogue, an engaging mystery, and a colorful cast of characters. Worth picking up.

The Bone Witch by Rin Chupeco. Not going to lie to you, folks. I genuinely have no idea what this book is about. That cover pulls me in. I need to touch it. I’ll end up reading this one just because that cover has it’s hold on me. Reviews of this book on Goodreads seem to be hit or miss but I’ll give it a shot.

A Perilous Undertaking by Deanna Raybourn
“There are times when every muscle, every nerve, screams for movement, when every instinct urges escape. But the instinct to fly is not always a sound one. There are occasions when only stillness can save you.”

I fell in love with Raybourn’s Veronica Speedwell mysteries when I read A Curious Beginning. Set in Victorian times, the characters in this series have depth and intelligence and the dialogue is superb. Not to mention the leading lady, Veronica, is wildly clever and sassy. It is impossible not to adore her.

A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J Maas
“He thinks he’ll be remembered as the villain in the story. But I forgot to tell him that the villain is usually the person who locks up the maiden and throws away the key. He was the one who let me out.”

I have genuinely read this book twice in the last week I love it so much. I didn’t expect to fall in love with this book or it’s predecessor, A Court of Thorns and Roses, but I did. When I started reading this series all I had heard was people gushing over them and, I admit, it was a little off putting. Over hyped books usually end up falling flat for me. But, I gave it a try and I am so glad I did. These are the only ones I’ve ever read about faeries that I have sincerely liked. Can’t wait for book three!

A Court of Wings and Ruin by Sarah J Maas
“You belong to all of us, and we belong to you.”

I bet no one saw this one coming, right? I started reading this series just over two weeks ago and I have to say that I am immensely glad that I’m not one of the folks who had to wait a year for the third book in this series to come out. The anticipation would have been brutal. A Court of Wings and Ruin is set for release on May 2nd and I am going to be waiting to pounce on the UPS guy when he delivers it.

A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J Maas. I started this book yesterday evening after finishing A Court of Thorns and Roses. It isn’t pulling me in as much as the first one did, unfortunately, but I’m only on page 170/624. I know that Feyre has to rebuild herself after all that happened to her but I just want to kick her booty into gear.

A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J Maas. In case you haven’t seen my review of this book, I loved it. I mean, really, what else can I say? From the first page to the last the story sucked me in and had no intention of letting me go. I was held prisoner by a book and I liked it.

A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J Maas. I am enjoying this book more than I thought I would. I really think that it is her world building that does it for me. Because, let’s be honest here, Feyre isn’t the most interesting of characters at this point (I’m around page 200) and she is moping around a lot. But, somehow, Maas manages to make that interesting. That is fascinating to me. I’m very much looking forward to finishing this one and moving onto the second book.

The Masked City by Genevieve Cogman. I admit, this book was a let down for me. It is the second book in Cogman’s The Invisible Library series and I had adored the first one so I expected to feel the same about the second. I didn’t. It was difficult to get through and I felt the plot strayed from the original elements that had made the first book interesting. Disappointing.

 

What do you think you’ll read next?

Alright, my lovelies, I’d like some help with this. I’m in the mood for a horror/thriller novel. Something that will get my blood rolling and make me jump at noises in the night. I will say that I’m not a fan of King but any recommendations would be wonderful! Horror is not a genre I jump into too often but I need to read some murder and mayhem. You tell me, what do you think I should read next?

The Masked City by Genevieve Cogman. I picked this one up from the library yesterday and am looking forward to getting started on it. I read the first book in the series, The Invisible Library, earlier this year and loved it. Hoping the second installment gives me the same warm feelings.

Cinder by Marissa Meyer. This book certainly left me with that “meh” feeling. It just didn’t give me the fizz. Sandra @Reading Through the Nights recommends I try the rest of the series and I probably will read the next one, just to see if it gets better. As it is, for being such a popular book I was completely let down, especially after having enjoyed Heartless by the same author as much as I did. Sigh.

What Angels Fear by C.S. Harris. From the sounds of it, this is a historical thriller with murder and mayhem. I could use a little mayhem, it’s the spice of life. You know, I couldn’t help but want to read this after so many people seemed to have their bowels in an uproar about it. Someone on Goodreads said that the book was, “…inappropriate for mankind’s eyes with it’s violence and disturbing themes.” I’ll judge that for myself, thanks.

Red Rising by Pierce Brown. I have been hearing about this book for ages and it has some amazing reviews on Goodreads so I finally picked it up from my local library. I’m only on page 80 but I already feel hooked. Brown’s writing style makes the story vivid and the characters relatable. The world building is flowing as well for me but hopefully that will change as the story progresses.

The Song Rising by Samantha Shannon. I had been waiting for this book, the third in Shannon’s Bone Season series, to be released for two years. When I finally got to read it I was not disappointed. This third book is easily the best of the series so far and I cannot wait to for her write more. It feels like waiting for the Harry Potter books to come out all over again. What a good feeling.

The Haunting of Ashburn House by Darcy Coates. I have been wanting to read this one for a while but haven’t been able to get my hands on it. Can’t find it at libraries and even Amazon doesn’t have it currently available as a purchase. You know what? That just makes me want it more. I need a good horror/thriller read.

If you read book blogs very often I’m sure at some point you’ve stumbled across someone’s WWW Wednesday post. WWW Wednesday was originally hosted by A Daily Rhythm, and was then revived by Taking on a World of Words.

Today that is a bit of a touchy subject and I’ll tell you why. Yesterday was the release date of The Song Rising by Samantha Shannon. If you have read some of my posts you may have noticed I have been anticipating this book for a long time as I bring it up probably more than I should. That being said I had pre-ordered that puppy, a signed copy no less, last year from Amazon for delivery yesterday March 7th. It didn’t come. I had made sure to have finished (…mostly) my previous read so that I could start on The Song Rising right away. To say that I am a bit peeved would an understatement.

Midnight Riot by Ben Aaronovitch. Well, not quite finished. Honestly, I don’t think I’m going to finish it. The story and characters just aren’t there for me. Maybe something was lost in it from it’s original version which was titled Rivers of London. As I was reading it there were obvious places where terms and phrases had been altered for the American audience and made those bits of the story feel broken. For instance, I’m fairly certain no one outside of America would say “soccer player” instead of “footballer” which was a conversion in this book. Just made it feel awkward.

 

What do you think you’ll read next?

Red Rising by Pierce Brown. This book is talked about so much by other bloggers, by people I follow on twitter, and even my little local library has a display based around this book. I’m starting to feel like I’m really missing out having not read this one!

 

 

Now I’m going to go call UPS and try to figure out where my package with The Song Rising is…again. I need my book! Happy reading, everyone!
