Reign of the Fallen (Reign of the Fallen #1) by Sarah Glenn Marsh

When I first saw this book announced during the summer of 2017 I was terribly excited to get my hands on it. As soon as it popped up on Netgalley in October, I believe it was, I requested it immediately. Of course, then I waited three months and had forgotten I had requested it until I got that magic “this book is now available to you” e-mail. I love those e-mails and I was especially excited for this book.  Continue reading

The Lost Plot (The Invisible Library #4) by Genevieve Cogman

34688608

“Irene made a private mental resolution that if she ever became a queen, her throne would incorporate a cushion. Also a convenient bookcase.”

Here we are again with Genevieve Cogman’s The Invisible Library series. This is the fourth book in the series that I have read and reviewed and Cogman never disappoints. We are once against back with Irene Winters and her friend/coworker/dragon/assistant/whatever Kai. They both work for The Library whose employees go between different worlds and dimensions in search of rare books to bring back and add to their collection. This Library exists between worlds and is only accessible after years of training to become a Librarian.  Continue reading

Ash Princess (Untitled Trilogy #1) by Laura Sebastian (eARC)

32505753

Theodosia was six when her country was invaded and her mother, the Queen of Flame and Fury, was murdered before her eyes. Ten years later, Theo has learned to survive under the relentless abuse of the Kaiser and his court as the ridiculed “Ash Princess.” Pretending to be empty-headed and naive when she’s not enduring brutal whippings, she pushes down all other thoughts but one: Keep the Kaiser happy and he will keep you safe.

When the Kaiser forces her to execute her last hope of rescue, Theo can’t keep her feelings and memories pushed down any longer. She vows revenge, throwing herself into a plot to seduce and murder the Kaiser’s warrior son with the help of a group of magically gifted and volatile rebels. But Theo doesn’t expect to develop feelings for the Prinz. Or for her rebel allies to challenge her friendship with the one person who’s been kind to her throughout the last hopeless decade: her heart’s sister, Cress.

Cornered into impossible choices and unable to trust even those who are on her side, Theo will have to decide how far she’s willing to go to save her people and how much of herself she’s willing to sacrifice to become queen. (Goodreads)

A Treacherous Curse (Veronica Speedwell #3) by Deanna Raybourn (ARC)

ATreacherousCurse

“I assure you, I am perfectly capable of identifying a phallus when I see one,” Stoke informed me, clipping the words sharply. “And that is no such thing.”

A Treacherous Curse (Veronica Speedwell #3) by Deanna Raybourn. I am going to preface my review with a a personal note. This was the first eARC I have received that caused jubilation. I requested this book from NetGalley never expecting to get it. When that accepted e-mail hit my inbox I legitimately danced for joy. I absolutely adored the first two books in this series, A Curious Beginning and A Perilous Undertaking, and to get my hands on this one early was wonderful. Continue reading

The Burning Page by Genevieve Cogman

“The only problem is that it’s difficult to imagine something entirely new. We use the words and definitions of the past to shape our ideas. Something that is genuinely the next evolutionary step is unlikely to resemble anything we can imagine.”

I may, or may not be, ashamed to admit it but this is the first book I have finished in over a month. Yikes. First it was the reading slump, then a book hangover, after that I was sewing my daughter’s Halloween costumer together and let me tell you folks that was no easy feat. After that was NaNoWriMo preparations and then NaNoWriMo itself. Reading for pleasure just didn’t top my priority list.  Continue reading

Roar (Stormheart #1) by Cora Carmack

book review

“You are lightning made flesh. Colder than falling snow. Unstoppable as the desert sands riding the wind. You are Stormling, Aurora Pavan. Believe it.”

I bought Roar back in June when it was first released and it has been sitting on my shelf ever since. The cover is lovely and it was nice to pick it up, look at it, and put it back down from time to time. I even opened it once and made it through the first chapter before I put it back down again. Why was I hesitant about reading it? The book has been billed as a fantasy romance and, well, romance just isn’t up my alley. Finally, last week I was feeling blue and thought a little romance might be just the pick me up I needed so I reached for this book and settled in on the couch with a steaming cup of tea. Mask of Shadows (Untitled #1) by Linsey Miller

maskofshadows

“I would remember them forever–their names, my reasons, the way their bodies slumped in death and their eyes stared through me. If I stopped, if I let their deaths weigh me down and keep me from being Opal, it was all for nothing. There was no going back. I was what I was, and they were a part of me now.”

How long has it been since I have done a full length book review? Legitimately it has probably been about two months.  Yikes! I haven’t necessarily been in a reading slump but I haven’t felt that need to talk about what I’ve read, do you know what I mean? If a book leaves me with a “meh” feeling I just don’t have anything to say about it. I’ve been reading a lot of “meh” books. However, Linsey Miller’s Mask of Shadows left me with a different feeling.  Continue reading
